Countdown to Disaster – Exhibit #11 in the Drama Queen Files

A chief scientist, a statesman, and an heir to a throne all say climate disaster is imminent. But their schedules don’t agree.

A friend has reminded me of the above headline, published 54 months ago in Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper: We’ve got 5 years to save world says Australia’s chief scientist Professor Penny Sackett.

Since we’ve progressed 87 percent of the way through that five-year countdown, this is surely a good time to ask whether the “disastrous global warming” trumpeted by that news story seems at all imminent. Will fire and damnation really be descending upon us in six short months?

Perhaps the chief scientist and France’s current foreign minister should arrange a tête-à-tête in order to get their timelines straight. Laurent Fabius recently declared that “we have 500 days to avoid climate chaos.” (Shortly after those 500 days expire, Paris will host a UN climate conference.)

When these two personages have got themselves on the same page, perhaps they could also do us the courtesy of liaising with Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne. In 2009, he announced that we had “100 months to save the world.”

According to almost-royal-decree, therefore, the countdown doesn’t end this December. Or even next October. We actually have four full years – until mid 2018 – before things get really ugly.

Honestly. Do these people never feel foolish uttering such nonsense?
